First Steve Werner Memorial Grant Awarded

The first Steve Werner Memorial Grant was announced at the 2011 Crane Creek Ace Race. It was awarded to Greg Goben, long time UFOS member and one of the first to joint the Disc Golf Outlaws. The grant was given for outstanding contributions to North Coast disc golf. Greg show up at Crane Creek, weed whacker in hand, ready to do battle with vicious weeds and hyper-stimulated grasses at a moments’ notice. He doesn’t need to be asked, he just does it. Any time there is a tournament, Greg is usually the first to volunteer to help. He happily transports baskets and boxes, adds up scorecards and sets up courses, contributing his time and resources whenever and wherever needed. We just wanted to say, Thanks, Greg, noted and appreciated.

Happy Birthday, Steve

Tuesday, September 20th, Steve Werner would have turned 41 and I know he would have spent the day playing a couple of rounds and hoisting a brew or two with his friends. Come join us on Tuesday, September 20th at 5pm, on the course that bears his name, in honoring Steve and celebrating the sport that was his passion.

We had a very nice write-up on the course that appeared in local newspaper “The Bohemian”. It appeared in their “Best of The North Bay” Recreation 2011 section. Text follows. Thanks to Greg Goben for flagging this for me, and thanks to the Bohemian for the write-up!

Report on the 2011 Steve Werner Memorial Tournament

Tags: , ,

The Steve Werner Memorial is a PDGA sanctioned “C” tier tournament designed
to introduce the novice or recreational player to disc golf as a tournament
sport. We encourage participation by offering the tournament experience
with lower entry fees, an experimental rating structure and a one day format.
The experimental format groups players in only three classifications: A Pool,
for the Pro or very experienced tournament player, B Pool, for the amateur
player who has been playing for while and is familiar
with tournament play, and C Pool, the player who is new to the sport of disc
golf or who has never before been involved in a tournament. A quarter of
our field this year was comprised of the “C” Pool player, and half of
those have stated that they may be entering a more advanced tournament this year.
We consider that a great success.

Steve Werner Memorial a success.

While we certainly can’t categorize the tournament a huge success, we are encouraged enough to make it an annual event. The tournament went very smoothly and we were done before dark. The tournament was definitely impacted by the fact that the St. Patty’s day tournament, a three day event, was taking place the same weekend. Other factors contributing to the low turnout was the parking limitations and the fact that many players had reservations about driving for a one day tournament. Next year, we are going to make it two days (either three or four rounds). We may also move the date. All in all, a good time was had by all.
