The first Steve Werner Memorial Grant was announced at the 2011 Crane Creek Ace Race. It was awarded to Greg Goben, long time UFOS member and one of the first to joint the Disc Golf Outlaws. The grant was given for outstanding contributions to North Coast disc golf. Greg show up at Crane Creek, weed whacker in hand, ready to do battle with vicious weeds and hyper-stimulated grasses at a moments’ notice. He doesn’t need to be asked, he just does it. Any time there is a tournament, Greg is usually the first to volunteer to help. He happily transports baskets and boxes, adds up scorecards and sets up courses, contributing his time and resources whenever and wherever needed. We just wanted to say, Thanks, Greg, noted and appreciated.

We had a very nice write-up on the course that appeared in local newspaper “The Bohemian”. It appeared in their “Best of The North Bay” Recreation 2011 section. Text follows. Thanks to Greg Goben for flagging this for me, and thanks to the Bohemian for the write-up!

Best 18 Holes to Backhand a Frisbee

The coolest thing to do in Rohnert Park is golf, but not with woods and irons. The best course is actually just outside the city, and it requires Frisbees. The Steve Werner Memorial Disc Golf Course at Crane Creek Regional Park is a five-minute drive from Sonoma State University, and the 18-hole hike can take 20 minutes to two hours to finish, depending on the golfer’s mood. The course is free to all (there’s a $6 Crane Creek parking fee), and like the park, it’s open sunup to sunset. The beautiful scenery can be mesmerizing, from 100-year-old oaks to miles of agriculture untouched by the bulldozers and cranes of development. For nongolfers, the occasional jingle of a disc hitting the metal chain and basket can seem a strange addition to chirping birds, rustling tall grass and bellowing bovine. But soon the sound blends in as part of the nature of the park, and the air doesn’t seem complete without it.

The Steve Werner Memorial is a PDGA sanctioned “C” tier tournament designed
to introduce the novice or recreational player to disc golf as a tournament
sport. We encourage participation by offering the tournament experience
with lower entry fees, an experimental rating structure and a one day format.
The experimental format groups players in only three classifications: A Pool,
for the Pro or very experienced tournament player, B Pool, for the amateur
player who has been playing for while and is familiar
with tournament play, and C Pool, the player who is new to the sport of disc
golf or who has never before been involved in a tournament. A quarter of
our field this year was comprised of the “C” Pool player, and half of
those have stated that they may be entering a more advanced tournament this year.
We consider that a great success.

The Second of the tournament went off without a hitch.
We had almost twice as many entries as last year in spite of the
threat of torrential downpour (which never materialized). Although
the course was wet and windy from previous rain, the Gods of Disc
Golf chased away the clouds for the day. Because the event was so
successful, we are confident we can move away from the experimental
structure of only three pools to the standard divisional structure
for next year. Hopefully, if the planned expansion of the parking
situation materializes by then, we will also move to a two-day,
three round format and a “B” tier event..

Praise goes to the guys from the United Flyers of Sonoma who, as
usual, turned out a full force work crew the week before the tournament
to make sure the course was in optimal playing condition. They did
some work on the tees and on the drainage so that if the rain did
materialize no one would have to do the backstroke. Thanks guys!

Aces abounded! And this in spite of the wind! We had four aces
during the tournament with two being made by the same player (Chris
Stone). So Dave Peremba (A Pool), Chris Stone (B Pool) and Devon
Kreyenhagen (B Pool) split the Ace Pool of $100. For Devon, it was
his first tournament and first Ace.

We paid 48% of each Pool this year and presented trophies to
the first three places in each.

A Pool
1st Place Roger	Cansler 79
2nd Place David	Brownlow 84
3rd Place Dallas	Albright	85

B Pool

1st Place Devon	Kreyenhagen 89
2nd Place Adrien	Cormeir 91
3rd Place Bob	Proctor 93

C Pool

1st Place Ryan	Macias 102
2nd Place Lewis	Bitney 102
3rd Place Brent	Lysander 104

Final Results for all should appear on the PDGA
site within the next couple of days.

Congratulations, everyone! You Rock!

While we certainly can’t categorize the tournament a huge success, we are encouraged enough to make it an annual event. The tournament went very smoothly and we were done before dark. The tournament was definitely impacted by the fact that the St. Patty’s day tournament, a three day event, was taking place the same weekend. Other factors contributing to the low turnout was the parking limitations and the fact that many players had reservations about driving for a one day tournament. Next year, we are going to make it two days (either three or four rounds). We may also move the date. All in all, a good time was had by all.
